Bukayo Ayoyinka T. M. Saka (born 5 September 2001) is an English professional footballer who currently plays for Premier League side Arsenal and the England national team as a winger, left defender, or centre midfielder.
Saka was born to Nigerian parents in Ealing, Greater London, and attended Edward Betham CofE Primary School before enrolling at Greenford High School. He is of Nigerian heritage; his parents came to London as economic migrants from Nigeria. “He’s enormous inspiration for me,” Saka said in an interview about his father’s role in his football career. He has always kept me grounded and humble since I was a child.” His name “Bukayo” comes from the Yoruba tribe in southern Nigeria, and it means “adds to enjoyment.”
Saka is of Nigerian heritage and was born in England. Saka has played for England in the under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19, and under-21 age groups. Saka was named to England’s under-17 squad in May 2018, as they hosted the 2018 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. Despite Saka’s penalty kick, the hosts were ousted in the semi-finals by the Netherlands after a penalty shoot-out.
Saka scored the game-winning goal for England’s under-18 team in an away match against France in September 2018. Saka was called up to the England under-19 team for the first time in November 2018. In a qualifier against Moldova, he scored in his debut age level. Saka made his England U21s debut on September 4, 2020, in a 6–0 win over Kosovo.
