Ali Daei (born March 21, 1969) is a former Iranian professional footballer, manager, and businessman. He was a striker who played in the German Bundesliga for Arminia Bielefeld, Bayern Munich, and Hertha Berlin between 2000 and 2006. He was captain of the Iran national football team from 2000 to 2006.
Daei was a tall forward who scored a lot of goals and was recognised for his heading precision and aerial skills. With 109 goals for Iran, he is the world’s joint all-time best goalscorer in men’s international football history, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. Daei was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2001 during his playing career.
Daei owns Daei Sport’s Wears & Equipments, a football jersey manufacturing company that produces sportswear for Iranian athletic clubs in many fields and league clubs around the world. His firm also produced uniforms for the national squad. He has made major charitable contributions and has participated in charity football tournaments all over the world (featuring in the World vs. Bosnia match with Roberto Baggio and others). He also starred alongside David Beckham and Madeleine Albright in a UNICEF commercial.
On July 18, 2007, Daei appeared in 90 Minutes for Mandela, a match between the Africa XI and the Rest of the World XI to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s birthday.
